The Hyperbaric Medical
Center started
operating in March
1993 in Sharm El Sheikh, South Sinai and comprises a multi-place
multi-lock
recompression chamber which was built in the USA with the funding of
USAID.
It belongs to the Ministry of Tourism. To date, (October 2001), it has
successfully treated over 550 severe cases of DCI. The staff comprises
two full time specialists. Dr Adel Taher, Consultant in diving
medicine,
led the implementation and development of the chamber. He is the
Director
of both the chamber and DAN-Egypt and a member of UHMS and EUBS. Dr
Ahmed
Sakr has been working as
Assistant Director for over 3 years and
gained a vast
experience in the management of diving accidents. The chamber is
working
closely together with the new Search and Rescue Center (SAR). Both are
strategically located within 300 feet of the main local jetty.
The Hyperbaric Medical
Center doubles
also as a training
facility for European physicians and medical students wanting to
specialise
in diving medicine, as well as offering the chance to local divemasters
and instructors to further their knowledge by taking the Hyperbaric
Tender
Course. Yearly we train 12-15
foreign physicians and between 40-50 new
tenders.
Future plans include
fitting and
furnishing the newly
built trauma center with in-patient and intensive care units, providing
a greater resource library, auditorium, helicopter landing pad, as well
as accommodation for staff and trainees.

DECO International (Diving
Emergency
Center Organization)
is a Cooperation between experienced
Egyption physicians for diving medicine,
who will be
assisted regularly by German physicians with
knowledge and experience in diving and
hyperbaric
medicine.
The recompression Chamber
in El Gouna
Hospital started
to function in April 98. There is a close
cooperation between the DECO International
and the
Center
of Hyperbaric Medicine and the Department
of Neurologie of the University Hospital
in Homburg.
Germany and the Naval Medical Institute of the
German Navy.
There are plans for
24-hours ambulance
service with facilities
for air lifting with a ambulance-plane. The
recompression chamber will also be a
training-center
for diving instructors of the region and European
physicans for diving medicine.
