The chambers and physicians listed have no relationship with this web site and no guarantees of quality are offered or implied. This is a listing supplied by the hyperbaric medicine physicians in Australia. The chambers in Australia and New Zealand are all located within hospitals and have medical supervision.

*If you are aware of changes, please send them to us.

*Please Note! Most of the numbers listed below with the (61) prefix are for calling from outside Australia. Phone numbers that are for use within Australia have standard prefixes as follows: (02) for NSW, (03) for Victoria and Tasmania, (07) for Queensland, (08) for South Australia and (09) for Western Australia. Thus the (61) prefix should be replaced with a (0) when calling from inside Australia.

Divers Emergency Service

In Australia: 1 800 088 200

Outside Australia: 61 8 8212 9242
Inside Australia:     08 8212 9242

All divers in Australasia, South-East Asia and Oceania are encouraged to ring this volunteer service, if they have any medical concerns after diving.

Currently funded by the Divers Alert Network, diving physicians are available 24 hours a day for consultations regarding emergencies related to diving. They will provide an initial assessment and generally make arrangements for the diver to be formally assessed by a local emergency department or diving physician. If necessary, retrieval by air or road can be arranged in the most urgent circumstances.

The carriage of adequate insurance covering retrieval for diving emergencies is encouraged for all divers on holiday.

General Information:

The Prince of Wales Hyperbaric Medicine Facility is located in
Sydney, Australia and is the only civilian hyperbaric facility serving
the population of New South Wales.

The facility is staffed by four half-time specialists (all primarily
qualified in Anaesthesia and/or Intensive Care), four full-time
nursing staff and two full-time technicians. A full range of hyperbaric
services are offered in their 4-chamber, 20-person facility.

Approximately 70 divers with DCI / Air Embolism are treated each
year. The facility is also involved in the care of a wide range of other
diving medical problems. There is an ongoing research programme
within the University of NSW and we participate in the training of
both Anaesthetists and Hyperbaric Physicians.

An educational  programme introducing the facility, advising on safe
diving practices and emergency first aid care is available to divers and
others interested.
